For Virginia in Autumn

For Virginia in Autumn

for Virginia Mohlere, authoress
by C. S. E. Cooney

to be crushed under-
foot, nor to fall
like a bird at worm
but to walk
as an empress
dispensing autumn
to the populace

she is the untucked
of a tallow tree
pretending to be
wearing her Orion bracelet
pink hair piled
high, a ragged flag
in the face of winter
showing her reds, her reds
her gold
